392nd Bomb Group

Target: Bottrop - 11 November 1944 - Mission #200

This milestone mission was a notable one for the 392nd in a number of respects. Not only was it to be its 200th raid for which great preparations were made, but it was significant in the fact that the last 100 missions since D-Day had been flown in just over five months — an average of (2) missions every (3) days. Also, the Group was to be the sole force up for the 14th Combat Wing on this day. Originally, the mission was briefed for Aachen but later changed to the synthetic oil refinery at Bottrop. A secondary target was given for the marshalling yards at Rheine once again. At 0520 and 0620 hours, (18) crews were briefed and the total 14th Combat Wing force represented by the 392nd took off beginning at 0900 hours. All aircraft went over target with a GH lead ship, releasing (396) 500# bombs through clouds, unobserved — weather being the only deterrent to this otherwise historical mission. No fighters were seen and friendly fighter support was rated fair. Flak was meager but accurate enough for (3) bombers to pick up some battle damage. All ships and crew returned safely amid well-deserved jubilation about 1415 hours.
