392nd Bomb Group

Three Targets: St. Laurent Sur-Mer, Forest De Cerisy & Vire
6 June 1944 - D-day - Missions #100, #101 & #102 -

Mission #100   Target: St. Laurent Sur-Mer

It was a unique coincidence that the Group was to fly its 100th combat mission on D-Day. On the 5th, Colonel Rendle had called a staff meeting to announce the next day’s hoped for Allied Normandy Invasion and briefed on the methods by which the 8th Air Force and, specifically, the 2nd Bomb Division were to assist in establishing the beach heads on the coast of France. On the 6th, the 392nd was assigned to fly two missions, the first of which was St. Laurent Sur-Mer/Collevile Sur-Mer area. Crews were briefed at 2200 and 2330 hours on the 5th. At 0240, (36) aircraft began take-offs, flying in six ship squadron formations. Target weather was a solid overcast with (33) ships releasing (942) 100# and 120# bombs by PFF, results being unobserved. All crews returned home without having seen anything of the great Allied landing force spectacle below them. Aircraft were back on the ground around 0900 hours from this first mission.

Mission #101   Target: Forest De Cersy

The second mission on the 6th was briefed at 0300 hours for (12) aircrews. The targets were located twelve miles south of the first mission’s target area. At 0600, all ships took off and bombed through 10/10th cloud cover again by PFF, returning around noon and again ‘not being able to see the Big Show’.

Mission #102   Target: Vire

Around noon on the 6th, a third target order came in and briefing for (22) aircraft sorties was conducted at 1300 hours. At 1640, (22) crews began take-offs with (19) going over a Target of Last Resort for the first mission - the town of Vire about forty-five miles inland from the coast. Problem5 were encountered during assembly because of poor area weather which got no better enroute and through the target. Some aircraft had to join other Group formations and were widely scattered. As a result, some did not release their bombs for fear of hitting friendly troops but (217) 500# GP bomb5 were dropped in the primary target area by PFF means. Mission aircraft recovered safely at base around 2100 hours, landing in heavy rain, with (2) diverting into near-by Shipdham - the 44th Bomb Group’s base.

Gen James P. Hodges, commander of the 2nd Bombardment Division, Hodges sent this teletype the evening of 6 June 1944 to units of the 2BD:

I congratulate all commanders on the highly superior record and performance of the units of this division on "D" Day. You went far beyond even the heavy commitments required of you.

The following facts are transmitted for your information: 1,000 aircraft of this division were dispatched and of these 97.4 were over their targets. Of this great force, the majority of which took off at night, only one aircraft has thus far been reported lost and that by a crash landing. General Doolittle observed the bombing of the first and largest wave of this division. He has informed me that he was greatly impressed with the smoothness and orderliness of the flow over the target, the precision with which the H2X ships dropped their smoke markers and the bombing on these markers by the balance of the force.

Information indicates that the landing beaches were terrifically beaten up with bombs. General Doolittle further informs me that the ground forces were most complimentary on the support they received from the Air Force and were particularly appreciative of the absence of the tragic bombing errors which it was feared might occur and which so often mar operations of this nature.

This day's work reflects the greatest credit on your units. Keep it up."

The following article about 578th pilot Capt Neely Young's experiences on D-Day is reprinted with permission of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Richmond, VA. It was published in their June 2, 2010 issue.

Sixty-six years ago this coming Sunday, Young pointed his B-24 bomber toward the French coast and flew into the muck that passed for weather that day with more than a dozen other planes following him.

It was like other missions in that fear gripped him before he took off and would afterward, but not during the flight. Never during.

"Once I pushed my full-throttle forward and we got started down the runway, that's when the training and the adrenaline kicked in and you became an entirely different person," Young said as we sat and talked in the West End home he shares with wife, Sharon.

"You didn't think about fear when you were in the air or in combat . . . even when you were under heavy fire. You just didn't think about dying. All you thought about was keeping that plane in the air and keeping in formation and getting your bombs on target. When you'd done that, all you wanted to do was get the hell back."

But much about D-Day was different. How could it not be when on the afternoon before Young and two fellow pilots were summoned to a colonel's office at the air base in England?

"The colonel said, 'I'd offer you a drink, but this is not drinking time,'" recalled Young, who was 23 at the time. "Then he said, 'This is what we've been waiting on, fellas.'"

Young's orders were to lead a bombing mission to Caen, a French town north of Paris that was occupied by Germans. He left England in the late afternoon on D-Day and flew across the English Channel, far above the bloody Normandy beaches that Allied forces had been invading all day.

The skies cleared enough for Young to look down and eyeball the shoreline.

"I could see what was going on down there," Young said, "but I wish I hadn't seen it.

"You could see all these bodies laying around, guys fighting, all this gunfire. You could see flashes. It was a bad scene."

Young lost one of his four engines, but otherwise he had a relatively easy go of it. After making landfall, he made a beeline for Caen and then turned around and headed back for England. The flight was shorter than most other missions and there was no resistance, a far cry from earlier operations when the flak from anti-aircraft guns was so thick "you could walk on it," Young said.

The hellishness was far below.

"I give all the credit to the boys on the ground," Young said.

I can't imagine, I said.

"I can't, either," Young said, his voice catching and his eyes moistening. "It really grabs you where you live when I think of what those poor guys went through. I often wonder if I had enough intestinal fortitude to do what they did."

Of the 150,000 Allied troops involved in the D-Day operation, more than 10,000 were killed or wounded.

Young made it home to Virginia unscathed, moved to Richmond in the early 1950s -- he'd grown up in Lexington, where his father, Harry K. "Cy" Young, was a legendary athlete and coach -- and wound up working primarily in the tobacco and men's-clothing businesses. The father of two sons, he didn't retire until he was 85.

He's certain fate smiled on him. He was delayed in getting to Europe in the first place because of the overflow of air cadets and knee surgery, so he believes he missed the most dangerous period for pilots.

He also got to spend a few months working an air base in Idaho with another young airman named Jimmy Stewart, who also happened to be a Hollywood star. But that's another story.

This one's about the men on the ground and, in Young's case, the men in the air on D-Day.

"If it wasn't for my crew, I wouldn't be here," he said.
