392nd Bomb Group

Target: Neunkirchen - 5 January 1945 - Mission #223

The briefed target was a choke-point near Kirn. At 0445 and 0600 hours, 19 crews were briefed; at 0830, all began their take-offs in light snow. The primary target was again obscured by clouds with both the lead and high squadrons electing to bomb a Target of Opportunity, the marshalling yards at Neunkirchen. The Group released (395) 250 and 500 pounders in the target area with the lead's results being poor and the high squadron's effort achieving fair to good impacts.

No enemy aircraft were sighted on this mission and flak was light but fairly accurate. 576th Sqdn pilot 1/Lt R.D. Johnson was hit by flying plexiglas on his right cheek bone near his eye when flak burst his window. A total of 5 returning bombers received battle damage. All landed safely at base around 1610 hours.
