| 11 February 1944 | Mission #35 | Target: No-Ball |
On 9 February, the Group was briefed and launched for the target of Gotha, but the mission was recalled an hour after take-off. On his return, 1/Lt Albert Lishka, Jr., pilot of B24H 42-7480, My Diversion, had a landing accident. According to his statement in the Report of Aircraft Accident, "I took off on a combat mission at 0750 with a bomb load of twelve 500 pounders and 2700 gallons of gas. At 0830 mission was recalled. On return landing I hit a little short of runway. The landing wasn't too rough but with the load we had, it snapped the left landing gear causing the accident." Further investigation revealed that the ship hit something at the end of the runway. The left landing gear collapsed and the left wing was dragged, causing the ship to break in two behind the bomb bay.

After the landing accident on 9 February 1944, B24H #42-7480 had to be salvaged. Luckily, no one aboard was injured. On 11 February, 25 aircrews were briefed between 0400-0430 hours with the 576th assigned lead and Lt Jackson as lead Bombardier. The Group bombed on PFF flares, dropping (283) 500# GP bombs; however, the lead navigator and bombardier did not believe the target was hit. No enemy aircraft were engaged. Flak, though light, was accurate, causing damage to 12 aircraft. No aircraft or crew member losses resulted, but a 576th Squadron aircraft, #598 with 1st Lieutenant H. W. Miller's crew, was forced to crash land at another base due to flak damage. Group aircraft recovered around 1200 hours.
In the afternoon, unit aircraft B24 #42-100187 was christened "Pallas Athene, G.I. Jane." Pictures were taken with a group of WACs from the 2nd Bombardment Division to aid in promoting WAC recruiting in the States. It was also announced that Captain Stauder, 578th Operations Officer, was being assigned as Assistant Group Operations Officer to Captain McFadden.
