392nd Bomb Group

Targets: Kiel & NoBall-Villers L’Hopital - 4 August 1944
Mission #144 & #145

Mission #144    Target: Kiel

The miniature submarine manufacturing plant at Kiel was the Group’s assigned primary and briefings were held at 0630 and 0730 for (29) aircrews. The mission was to be PFF led and after fog delayed scheduled take-offs, the Group finally launched all crews starting at 1009 hours. An effective smoke screen was laid down over the target area and the lead aircraft’s release was not observed. However the Group’s low left squadron did an excellent job of bombing on rail facilities one mile south of the target. A total of (348) 500# GP bombs were released on the target area. While no enemy fighters were encountered once again, flak in the area was moderate and extremely accurate causing considerable aircraft damage and personnel casualties. In the 578th, the pilot of ship #002, First Lieutenant P. F. Barton was killed when struck in the head by flak shrapnel. The crew Co-Pilot, 2nd Lieutenant W. I. Riddleberger brought the ship and crew home safely. From the 577th in #867, a gunner was fatally injured by flak, also. Two other wounded personnel from the 578th were experienced, the Navigator aboard #852 and a Gunner on #478 of Lieutenant L. F. Quinn’s crew. All mission aircraft returned safely, landing about 1640 hours, with (19) ships receiving battle damage.

S/Sgt Albert F. DeStefano was the tail gunner aboard 1/Lt Quinn's plane. After this mission, he wrote in his personal journal, "We always expected a rough mission and today we finally got one. Borchers, from Nebraska, was hit in the left shoulder and it left a pretty nasty wound. He went to Morley Hall for now and probably won't fly for a few weeks. I counted 21 holes in the ship. They say we hold a record so far. A piece of flak hit Quinn's helmet causing no damage. Another piece of flak went through the nose turret but didn't hit Lips and still another piece cut Brown's earphone wire. Another piece of flak went through the navigation equipment but didn't hit Kostlan.

Mission #145    Target: NoBall-Villers L’Hopital

For the second mission of this date only (3) aircraft were operationally available. While the other mission to Kiel was in progress, a NoBall target was briefed with one crew each from the 576th, 577th and 578th participating. Briefing was completed at 1200 hours and at 1300 the aircraft took off. The 577th led the mission which dropped (72) 250# bombs on target, all returning safely to base around 1615 without having any enemy opposition.

CASUALTIES NOT LISTED IN MACR

2/LT Barton, Paul F. (P) 578th KIA

Lt. Barton was killed by a flak fragment flying through the cockpit on the Kiel mission this day. Co-Pilot W.I. Riddleberger successfully brought the aircraft and crew home safely. This aircrew was flying B-24H Model #41-29002, Call Letter "T-Bar", no nickname. This plane would go down with the Shelley crew later on 21 September in a ditching emergency on the mission to Koblenz. No final record of interment exists on Lt. Barton.

T/SGT Lancy, N.J. (RO) 577th KIA

This crew member received fatal wounds on the same mission to Kiel. He was flying on l/Lt. D.W. Monroe’s crew, plane B-24H Model #42-94867, Call Letter "RI-", no nickname, lost with the Lt. Billingsley crew on the mission to Bingen, 2 December 1944. The Monroe crew was flying in the lead position of the High Block on this particular raid. Sgt.
