The primary target was the synthetic oil plant again near this town with a secondary of the Bisenach marshalling yards. By 0700 hours, all (26) aircrews were briefed and at 1044 hours all began take-offs. Each went over the target with Lieutenants Rodriquez and Robinson of the 579th and 576th respectively acting as Lead Bombardiers. The Group released a total of (1352) 100# bombs on the aiming point with excellent results. No fighters were sighted but fairly accurate flak resulted in battle damage to (9) Liberators and (1) casualty resulted. All aircraft were back on the ground around 1800 hours.
This crew member was the Flight Engineer-Gunner on 2/Lt. Bell’s crew flying in B-24H Model #42-50343, nicknamed "TONDELAYO", Call Letter "Bar-C", on the mission to Zeitz of this day. There is no record as to the exact cause of his death but that he was returned with his crew as a fatality. A photo published in the November 2000 edition of the 392nd BGMA News shows that #343 had received a direct hit on the top turret. Crew navigator David Orenbach recalled, "We had taken fire from fighters as well as flak, and I do not know from which came the fatal blow. It was a mortal wound, and the crew was unable to save T/Sgt Gilmore's life. All we could do was give him morphine." There is no record of his burial in an overseas U.S National plot. (Note: This particular aircraft would be interned on 20 June 1944 at Bulltofta, Sweden, having landed there with the same aircrew (Bell’s) on that mission date.
