392nd Bomb Group

Target: NoBall Watten - 21 March 1944 - Mission #54

After the disastrous mission of 18 March, a two day stand down for the Group was ordered. Only (13) B-24s remained operationally capable to be flown. On the 20th, a NoBall target was assigned, and briefings completed for crews around 0600 hours on the 21st. The 578th Squadron was assigned lead with Lt Kelly as Bombardier and, for the first time, the unit was to be led by a GH bombing radar aircraft. At 0930 hours, (13) Liberators began take-off. All aircraft bombed the target area which was obscured by 8/lOths cloud cover with results unobserved. A new type of chaff was employed for the first time on this mission which proved to be very effective against enemy radars. A total of (52) 2000# GP weapons were released. Enemy fighter opposition was nil and flak was light but fairly accurate. No aircraft were lost but (5) returned with some flak damage. All recovered safely at base around 1345 hours.
