392nd Bomb Group

Stand Down - 11 March 1944

On this date, a Group stand-down had been scheduled with a station dance being held where "everyone seemed to enjoy themselves."

At 1052 hours, aircraft B-17F #42-30167 landed at Wendling to pick up the ferry crew of another aircraft delivered to the field. The pilot was 1/Lt Carl N. Stitzel of the 310th Ferrying Sqdn, 27th A.T.G. Shortly after landing, the aircraft was being parked in dispersal 43. As the a/c entered the dispersal and was turning around under its own power, the right elevator was damaged by a Tannoy speaker post situated about 10 feet from the dispersal edge. Damage to the aircraft was estimated to require two days to repair and was done by the 465th Sub Depot.
